Interstates Construction got its start in the early 1950s under the name “Johnny’s Electric.” During the early years, most of the company’s business was commercial projects, including schools, churches, and stores, located primarily in northwest Iowa. Johnny’s Electric also began to do a limited amount of work with grain elevator and feed mill construction companies.

In the 1960s, Johnny’s Electric was renamed Interstates Electric and Engineering to support its expanding service offerings and movement into the industrial world.
Interstates also began to offer total “design-build” electrical packages, which accounts for a majority of its business today.

Throughout the ‘70s, Interstates Electric and Engineering continued to grow. The industrial sector brought the company's workforce to jobs in Texas, Alabama, Kansa, as well as to other project locations throughout the United States.

Several events took place that helped fuel the company’s development in the 1980s. Interstates recognized many of their customers wanted turnkey electrical systems (one point of contact for engineering, automation, and electrical construction).
The need for control system solutions was also growing, so a control systems division was started. In 1983, Interstates worked on its first international projects, including two jobs in Egypt.

In the 1990s, Interstates Electric and Engineering continued to lean on its past experience in the feed and grain industries, but became involved in other venues as well, including the chemical processing, food processing, oilseed, and renewable fuels industries.
With the specialization of services, the control systems and engineering divisions of Interstates Electric and Engineering became separate business units.

After the formation of these separate business units, in 2004 Interstates Electric and Engineering Co., Inc. changed its name to Interstates Construction Services, Inc.
This was done to provide the public and Interstates’ clients a clear picture of what specific services were available through each operating company.
Over the last fifty years, Interstates Construction has seen significant growth within its companies and the industries in which it works. The company has grown to over 400 people working throughout the country on numerous commercial and industrial projects.
In the last ten years, Interstates Construction has added four regional offices and one satellite office to better support and service their growing client base.
